The Ukrainian crisis is a test for the European Union

 Friday, January 14, 2022

Islamabad (News advertisment. DW news. January 14, 2022) In this context, Russian forces continue to gather on the Ukrainian border. Russia's military presence in Ukraine appears to be on the rise. On the other hand, Europe is not getting a chance to sit at the negotiating table.

An important meeting between senior US and Russian diplomats also took place in Geneva this week.

No EU official was present at the meeting.

We have no intention of invading Ukraine, Russia assures US

Another hurdle for the EU was that when talks between senior US and Russian diplomats were moved from Geneva to Brussels, the headquarters of the Western defense alliance, NATO, was chosen instead of the European Council.

The talks took place on Thursday in Vienna, the headquarters of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

Gathering of Ukrainian and Russian forces

The Moscow government has been accused of amassing about 100,000 combat troops on the Ukrainian border. Western nations have called on Russia to withdraw its troops or reduce their numbers.

What is the dispute between Russia and America now?

Russia, meanwhile, says the Western defense alliance should withdraw its forces from countries that have been part of the former Soviet Union. Russia has also said it does not want Ukraine to join the NATO alliance, in addition to moving the Western defense alliance eastward. In this situation, the European Union is still watching the situation from afar.

The European Union, a geopolitical power

An important meeting of the foreign ministers of the union member states is taking place on Thursday and Friday in the northwestern French city of Brest. It is possible that the meeting will lead to a consensus on a joint strategy on the Ukrainian crisis.

A French diplomat told the media on condition of anonymity that the union was fully involved in the crisis in Ukraine.

Observers are deeply concerned about the EU's insignificant role in Russia-US talks on the crisis.

If Russia invades Ukraine, there will be a decisive response, Biden said

Observers also say that the Russian-American dialogue is similar to the one after World War II, when the two powers (the United States and the former Soviet Union) continued to talk about the future of Europe.

On Friday, January 14, the German government expressed the expectation that talks between the West and Russia on the Ukrainian conflict would continue.

Brendan Sims, director of the Center for Geopolitics at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, says it is important for Europe to emerge as a force to be reckoned with. He also said that the European Union would have to become one country instead of different states. According to Sims, a country with a parliament and a president would be a major geopolitical force.
