Rains in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, hundreds of people died

 Sunday, August 21, 2022

Islamabad (Urdu Point. DW Urdu. August 21, 2022) At least 40 people have been killed and many others are missing in floods caused by heavy monsoon rains in the north of India during the past three days. Thousands of houses, roads and bridges have been destroyed as hundreds of villages have been inundated in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand states. According to the Meteorological Department, more rains are expected in the affected areas for the next two days.

According to Indian officials, hundreds of flood-affected people have taken refuge in camps in the state of Himachal Pradesh due to landslides and floods. Heavy rains continue in Uttarakhand state, due to which four people have died and 13 are missing, while dozens of houses have been washed away in flood channels.

Rescue teams are continuing to evacuate the stranded people in both the states.

The situation in Afghanistan

At least 20 people, including nine children and two women, have died due to heavy rains and flash floods in Afghanistan's Khushi district. According to a statement issued by the Taliban, 3000 residential houses in the country have been completely or partially destroyed due to floods. According to Afghan officials, 60 percent of the crops standing on the agricultural land of the affected district were also affected by the rains.

Steps are being taken by the Taliban authorities and welfare organizations to search for the bodies and provide food and shelter to the victims.

The situation worsened after the recent rains in Pakistan

On the other hand, Monsoon rains have severely affected many areas of Punjab and Balochistan along with the northern regions of Pakistan. Monsoon rains flooded many parts of Pakistan this week, leaving thousands of people homeless and dozens of lives lost. Standing crops in the lowlands of Sindh and Punjab have been destroyed, while the 30-year record of rainfall in Balochistan has been broken. Several communication roads have been washed away in flood lanes.
