May 10, 2024) The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) said that it will return to the area after weeks of attacks by Israeli settlers. It is temporarily closing its headquarters in occupied Jerusalem due to arson and protests against the United Nations.
UNRWA Commissioner General Filipe Lazzarini said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that although no crew members were injured in the fire, it caused extensive damage to the exterior. He said that our director put out the fire himself with the help of other staff. He said it was the second horrific incident in less than a week after a similar violent demonstration on Tuesday.
He added that a mob with armed men was seen outside the compound chanting "Burn the United Nations". This is an outrageous development and once again poses a serious threat to the lives of UN staff. They said they have decided to close the compound until adequate security is restored.
He noted that Tuesday's protests turned violent when settler protesters threw stones at UN staff and buildings under Israeli police surveillance. Over the past months, UN staff have been regularly harassed and threatened. has been targeted. Our compound has been severely vandalized and damaged. On several occasions, Israeli extremists threatened our staff and pulled out pistols.
The UNRWA chief emphasized that it is Israel's responsibility as the occupying power to ensure that UN personnel and facilities are protected at all times. He called on influential people to end these attacks and hold all those responsible accountable. The perpetrators of these attacks must be investigated and those responsible must be held accountable.
