July 7, 2024) The three-day Sanatorus Mango Festival in the largest business center of Islamabad, Centaurus Mall, in collaboration with the University of Agriculture, Multan, has ended. Addressing the opening ceremony, Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan said that Pakistan continues to be the global leader in mango production, more than 300,000 small farmers are engaged in mango cultivation which provide income and livelihood in rural areas. An important source of employment, Punjab province accounts for the highest share of national mango production at 78%, while Sindh province accounts for around 21.6%.
He said that the total production of mangoes in Pakistan is 1.79 million tons per year, of which only 6% is exported to the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Oman, the United States and the European Union. More than 0.36%, 0.71 million tons which is 20-40% of the country's volume, losses in mango production are more than its exports.
In order to curb losses and increase export production, Yasir Ilyas stressed that the government and stakeholders should promote modern farming practices, provide training to farmers, invest in cold storage facilities, transportation and packaging infrastructure. , implement integrated pest management strategies, focus on disease-resistant cultivars and development, and explore new export markets.
The Mango Festival attracted participants and audiences including academics, researchers, government officials, ambassadors, agronomists and mango growers. It is an important means of increasing export capacity. By sharing information and fostering linkages and trust among stakeholders, productivity of the mango industry is increased.
There are more than 70 varieties of mangoes at the festival, including popular varieties like Sindhiri, Langra, Chonsa, Anwar Ritul, and Dussehri, as well as unique varieties like Nilan, Begum, and Ehsaas.
