G-Seven agrees to use frozen Russian assets to provide $50 billion to Ukraine

 Friday, June 14, 2024

Rome (Urdu Point News Latest - NNI. June 14, 2024) G-7, a group of advanced economies, has been accused of using frozen Russian assets to provide $50 billion in cash to Ukraine to help fight Russian forces. Agreed. According to the BBC, on the occasion of the G7 summit in the southern city of Puglia, US President Joe Biden said that this move is another reminder to Russia that we will support Ukraine until we win the war with Russia. We are not backing down, nor can Russian President Vladimir Putin divide us.

According to the report, the money is not expected to be received by Ukraine until the end of this year, but it is seen as a long-term solution to support Ukraine's war effort and economy.

On the occasion of the G7 summit in Italy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Joe Biden also signed a 10-year security agreement between Ukraine and the US.

About $325 billion of Russian assets were frozen by G-Seven in cooperation with the European Union following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Most of the frozen assets of the Russian central bank are held in Belgium. These assets are earning about $3 billion in interest annually. According to the G7 plan, these $3 billion will be used to pay annual interest on a $50 billion loan to Ukraine, but under international law, countries cannot seize these assets from Russia and give them to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president thanked the US and other allies for their unwavering support. G7 member countries include USA, UK, France, Canada, Germany, Italy and Japan.
